Solar heat gain coefficient is how the reflective qualities of the Low-E glass is rated, Low-E glass (E stands for emittance) is the multi layered coating of your new energy saving windows, as important or more important than the U-factor of the whole window. The slowing of heat transfer across the insulated glass units with Low-E glass is vital to the energy saving of your home. It always reflects the heat back to its source. The lower the number the better the reflective qualities of the Low-E glass package that works in summer and also the winter.

Low-E Coating in Summer.
In the summer months the Low-E reflects the solar heat gain from the suns rays along with the long range heat waves from the hot roads, sidewalks and automobiles away from your house and keeps it outside, allowing your home to stay cooler and the A/C running less.

Low-E Coating in Winter.
Heat is always drawn to cold, trying to heat the cold. In the winter Low-E reflects the heat that is trying to radiate out through the glass back into your house. This keeps your windows and home a lot warmer and the furnace running less, saving you money on your winter energy cost and keeps you a lot more comfortable. If you notice it only reflects heat, it reflects the long range heat waves back into your house.

Energy Star SHGC Rating.
The Washington Metro area is in the north central area of the energy star map. Energy star rated windows must have a solar heat gain coefficient of .40 or below and in the south and south central it must be .25 or below. However it seems we have hotter than normal summers in this area and Thermal Specialties recommends the solar heat gain coefficient to be .25 or better for summer and winter comfort.

Ultra Violet Light.
Low-E glass also reflects more than 50 to 70 percent of the suns damaging ultra violet light from getting into your house and fading your furniture, carpeting, shades, curtains, paintings, photos, wood flooring products and all your family’s treasured items.

What is air exchange?
If you have windows or doors leaking air around or under them in your home, it will allow air to get in and causing positive air flow through all the windows on that same side of your house. Then when the wind blows up and over the house it creates negative air flow on the other side of your home, if you have a poorly sealed window or doors leaking air on the other end of the house, even on another floor it will cause negative air flow, drawing air out of your home, so the air is being pulled out of your house through these negative side doors and windows causing air exchange. Again, because your house has wind blowing against it and into it causing positive air flow inside the house, as the wind blows up and over the house it creates negative air flow meaning the air is being pulled out your house on the negative side through these doors and windows causing air exchange. Sometimes just two leaky windows or doors can exchange the air in your house every hour leaving the house hard to heat in winter and making the floors very cold, the house feel cold and very drafty. Air exchange will also make your home very hard to keep cool in summer, you do not notice it as much in the summer because the air in not freezing cold but the air is still being exchanged and costing you money as air conditioning is more costly to make.

How does installing new replacement windows & doors stop air exchange and drafts in your home?

Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is the main ingredient to stopping air exchange and drafts, weatherstripping can be fin seal, compression seal or bubble seal. Compression and bubble seal can be made of closed cell foam or soft rubber. Fin Seal is polyester pile with a Mylar fin held up between the piles as to make contact with its designated surfaces. All block drafts to eliminate the air exchange in your home

Windows
New replacement windows have 15 – 17 multi-layer fin seal and compression seal weatherstripping points to prevent or stop almost all air flow around the windows.

Entrance doors
New entrance doors have great compression style weatherstripping around the three sides of the door and triple door sweeps on the bottom to block out all the drafts and the cold breeze that runs along your floor.

Sliding patio doors
Old sliding patio doors also have a couple of trouble areas like the center interlocking meeting rail where either the weatherstripping has worn out or the interlocks do not meet as they did years ago due to the house settling. Also the old doors set up on the rollers with nothing in front or behind the sliding door to block air from just going under the door and into your home.

New sliding patio doors slide between weatherstripped blocks on inside and outside of door to prevent air from getting under the whole width of the door. These new doors also have fin seal on both interlocking rails where doors meet at the center and multiple weatherstripping around sides of door to prevent air flow or air exchange.

Customers ask me all the time what the process is for replacing their windows, so I will go over it in some detail for you now, explaining how if they want replacement windows in Silver Spring, Kensington, Rockville or Potomac MD. even if it is Arlington, Fairfax or Springfield VA. The three to four week process works well to get their replacement windows installed in a very timely and skillful manner.

Getting Started
It all starts with the in home demonstration, this is where you have the salesperson over to look at your project, measure the windows for estimate or price quote, we look at all the windows, point out different conditions, problems and solutions. We will sit down and go over the estimate and discuss different energy saving, aesthetic window options and prices so we can come to a final price to get your window project completed the way you vision and desire. We will right up the contract there at you home or email it to you later in the day where you will sign and date it and decide on the many payment options for the deposit on your custom-made windows.

The Measure
One of my crew chiefs will come to your house and measure each window for manufacture, double check the options and get a material list for the job. Then the job will be ordered from the manufacturer, the manufacturer than sends us a confirmation sheet with all the particulars on it that must be check thoroughly and then must be signed as this is the final check before manufacture begins.

The Windows Are Manufactured
Once the windows are manufactured, they are delivered to our warehouse in about two weeks, tempered glass or exterior color taking a bit longer, they then are checked and we call the customer and schedule what is normally a one day job installation, sometime this can happen as soon as tomorrow if someone can be home and we have an opening in our installation schedule or there is a convenient schedule set for someone to take off work on the installation date.

Installation Date
On the installation date we will arrive as early as possible, depending if we finished early the day before and picked up the windows and are ready to go that morning or we have to stop at the warehouse to pick up the windows that morning, this only takes a few minutes but it does allow the traffic to get a little ahead of us, but we are there usually between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. to get started.

The Removal of Old Windows
We will put drop clothes down in front of the windows as we work on them, carry the windows in and place them in the proper rooms, if the old windows are wood, we tear out the old windows mostly by what we call an outside install, take the storm window out, cut the storm window stop and the windows are pushed out to the outside, this way we do not damage, mark or even touch the interior trim. Metal windows are a little different we tape some of the glass if necessary and just saw and pry the old windows out being careful not to damage the drywall or any trim.

The Installation of The New Replacement Windows
This is where it gets fun, the new window is pulled into place from the outside, the installer is inside the home pulling it into place from the outside into the clean window pocket, it is screwed into place and checked for square in the hole, this is important because some window pockets are not level or square, care must be taken here to get it in square and on a solid flat surface and not all shimmed up off the flat surface because it will bow later in time and will not seal properly. The window is then screwed into place, then low expanding foam is blown in between the old window frame and the new window frame as to prevent any drafts getting in around the new windows.

Finishing of The Outside
The exterior trim, Alcoa vinyl coated aluminum capping that comes in a 24 inch x 50 foot roll is then measured and formed on the metal brake used to bend to match the brick molding or whatever is needed around the exterior to give the windows the beautiful finished exterior look, then caulked with upgraded quad formula caulking to prevent any air or water penetration from the outside. The job is then cleaned up completely, hauling away all old windows, old screens and all debris to proper disposal area, finally we vacuum around the interior work area of the home.

Enjoying The New Beautiful Windows
Now you are ready to enjoy the quietness and warmth of your beautiful brand-new windows for many years to come.

Getting the window estimate.
Most Homeowners associations do have written rules for what they require to help when you are getting the replacement window estimate so you will know what options you need. Some require colonial grids, colored exterior capping around the perimeter of the windows and some even require the exterior of the replacement window be a tan or beige color with matching colored exterior capping.

Getting the approval.
Most homeowners associations do require board approval before your new replacement windows in Rockville, Potomac or Silver Spring are installed, they ask for a copy of your replacement window estimate or contract to be sure they are compliant to the rules. Some require approval but have no requirements and hold up the processes for weeks by having the homeowner wait for approval but are not actually approving anything.

How do they help?
They do help by protecting your property value from homeowners that do not maintain their property or have a wilder choice of paint colors for their homes. In the case of replacement windows in Rockville, Potomac or Silver Spring when some homeowners want the colonial grids and other neighbors in the townhouse project do not want the colonial grids, it does not have the look of uniformity as you would like in a neighborhood if all the homes in close proximity had grids in all the windows, especially in a townhouse project.

Price buyers look for the best deal
Price buyers are the no nonsense type of buyer, they are looking for the best deal but maybe not the cheapest price or product, They want the best product for their money and of course that includes replacement windows. They may want a whole house of Vinyl Replacement windows in Rockville MD for there own home or a couple of replacement windows in silver Spring MD for a rental property that they may be working on or have a good long term tenant they want to fix up the property for. When they start getting replacement window quotes and getting information online about replacement window prices and window options, they will learn the product features that they want and think are important to them. From there they will want online window quotes, in home estimates and demonstrations to get the right price and features at the cost that they feel is fair and honest.

Price buyers do not waste time, they love instant online window estimates
As a rule the price buyer thinks time is money, so they do not like to waste their time looking at windows and window options unless they are going to buy, this is why they like to use the instant online window quote, they get window prices in real time and can go back to try another quote or different window options without having to contact the salesperson.

Price buyer do buy
After doing there do diligence, generally the price buyer does buy the products that they feel are worth the money, usually with only the options they want and at a price they are comfortable with. So price is not their only motive, it is the best price for the best product.

The high price value builder.
A customer gets a free replacement window estimate or a free window quote from a salesperson that comes to their home, after showing you the replacement windows and window options, you start to discuss price. The salesperson gives you a very high price, when you get this higher first price, it is to build value in their product, showing you how the window is worth a lot more money than he is going to charge when he gets to the close. The salesperson gave you a price of $13,000, now the salesperson is trying to get this Replacement window project within your budget and his final price for today only is $9,000. Now you think in your mind you are getting $13,000 worth of windows for only $9,000.

The lower price from the start.
Again you have a salesperson at your home, after showing you replacement windows and window options, you start to discuss price. The salesperson gives you a high price, when you get this first higher price, it is to build value in their product, showing you how the window is worth more money than he is going to charge when he gets to the close. The salesperson gave you a price of $10,000, now the salesperson is trying to get this replacement window project within your budget and his final price for today only is $9,000. Now you think in your mind you are only getting $10,000 worth of windows for only $9,000.

The product comparison is the difference.
This is why customers must do their research online at manufacturers website or WindowQuoteNow.com. The difference could be minimal if there is any at all. Customers need to get comfortable with what their buying and understand the differences though online research and windowQuoteNow.com, but maybe not by getting four or five free in home estimates from salespeople that are in your home for hours.
